About the book:
In the 1970's, in Lima, Peru, Fernando La Rosa founded Secuencia Foto-Galeria, the first gallery in Latin America dedicated to photography. This book is a record of La Rosa's solo exhibition, "Portafolio II" held in 1977 at Secuencia. “Portafolio I” was La Rosa’s 1975 solo exhibition at Galeria Forum in Lima, which was Forum's first solo exhibition. For each exhibition, Secuencia published a newsletter, TEXTOS. The first 3 pages of TEXTOS 5 are included in this book, with La Rosa's artist's statement and resume corresponding to this 1977 solo exhibition. The book represents 14 black and white photographs from the mid 1970's in Peru. La Rosa studied with Minor White, and exhibited the work of Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan at Secuencia. La Rosa selected the name, Secuencia, in recognition of "Secuences", Minor White's method of analyzing and presenting photographs. La Rosa curated for Secuencia, the first solo exhibition in Lima, of the photographs of Peru’s Martin Chambi. The first image in this book is one of which La Rosa took while at the Cusco studio of Chambi. The selection of images for this book were compiled by Fernando La Rosa, based on his records of the images in the 1977 exhibition. The book also contains a period self-portrait of La Rosa, taken in his Lima apartment. Secuencia Foto-Galeria only existed for a few years, but it left a powerful impact on development of photography as a primary art form in Peru.
